Stormwater runoff appears to be the culprit behind elevated bacteria levels in swim waters of Sea Bright, Middletown, Spring Lake and Ocean Grove. State environmental workers re-test them again today.

Margate City might soon join the growing list of New Jersey's smoke-free beaches. Officials there have yet to vote on revised regulations. Nearby, in North Wildwood, new, graphic warning signs on unprotected stretches of beach might reduce the risk of drownings. Municipal officials implemented them in the aftermath of a 2012 drownng, and court action taken by the victim's family.

Air Force veteran Tairod Pugh of Neptune is given 35 years in prison for his convicton on terrorism charges in New York. Prosectuors contended that Pugh aimed to act in support of Islamic State. A laptop confiscated in a Turkish airport in 2015 contained data of crossing points on the Turkish-Syrian border and jihadist propaganda.

A Lenape High School chemistry teacher heads to court to answer allegations of upskirting girls in classrooms and hallways. Eric Howell of Maple Shade has been barred from the school by administrators since the beginning of May.
