Kevin Callahan gets set to start his 28th season as the only head coach in Monmouth University history and he does so with a team loaded with veteran talent and the odds-on favorite to win a third straight Big South title.

The Hawks return all but one starter from a team that went 3-0 during an abbreviated conference schedule last spring before losing to eventual National Champion Sam Houston State, 21-15, in the opening round of the FCS Playoffs.

The Hawks received all but two of the 18 first-place votes in the Big South preseason poll which was released at last week’s media day in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Equally impressive was that running back Juwon Farri and safety Anthony Budd were named preseason offensive and defensive players of the year and among 15 players named to the Big South preseason all-conference team.  With all this talent it’s no surprise the Hawks are ranked 10th in the nation according to the FCS Coaches preseason poll.

Monmouth opens practice on Friday in preparation for their season opener at Middle Tennessee State on September 4th.
