Why Can't NJ Residents Get A Good Night Sleep In December?

Have you found yourself tossing and turning during the month of December? Maybe this restless feeling lasts into January, February, and maybe even March or April. It sounds like I'm leading into a humorous punchline, but this situation is serious.

Why are New Jersey residents restless at this time of year? It's because of "holiday debt". MattressNextDay, a leading online mattress retailer, says, "According to the survey, 30% of New Jersey respondents cite holiday debt as their biggest holiday worry."

"According to a new study by MattressNextDay, 40% of Americans report higher stress levels during the holiday season, with many struggling to get a good night’s rest amid the festive chaos."

Personally, I think many times we find ourselves putting too much emphasis on "the gift" and not "the thought". Yes, we all love lavish gifts from time to time but if you are overextending to the point of losing sleep because you spent too much money at Christmas, maybe it's time to rethink the process.

We all know as parents it's tough when all the kids in school want an expensive gift (the big item of the year) and so does your child. This can get quite expensive especially if you have several children.

According to the MattressNextDay survey, these are the top reasons for losing sleep at the holidays, according to responses they got from people surveyed.

  • Holiday Debt: 30%
  • Gift Expectations: 22%
  • Family Dynamics: 17%
  • Hosting Events: 17%
  • Decorating The Home: 17%

By the way, women are more likely to worry about finances. "1 in 3 female respondents to our survey were worried about debt over the festive period, while only 23% of men listed it as a fear."

According to this report, sleep expert  Martin Seeley said these are some ways to combat a sleepless holiday.

  • Stick to a Sleep Schedule
  • Limit Screen Time
  • Create a Relaxing Wind-Down Routine
  • Optimize Your Sleep Environment
  • Plan and Prioritize

So try some of the tips to get some sleep. Another solution, although maybe not too popular, is simply to spend less. Spend what you have and don't go over your budget. Enjoy time with friends and family, enjoy your holiday decorations and food, and enjoy "a long winter's nap".
