I’m back!  Did you miss me or simply forget me?  Actually don’t answer that because I know what your response will be.

The holidays provided a nice break for me in which the highlights were 12 days without setting an alarm clock, only shaving twice, wearing sweatpants most days, binge watching all 29 episodes of “Yellowstone”, almost finishing a book and seeing my grandson on two different occasions.

The downside was having my 93-year old mother in the hospital and not being able to visit her. That and what I consider very poor communication from doctors made it very difficult but I’ll leave that for another day.

So here I am and here we go with 2021 and while we all hope and pray for a better year it is one filled with so many unknowns when it comes to COVID-19 and its impact on our physical, mental and financial health.  When does life get back to normal? Maybe a better question is will it ever get back to normal?

At some point do we refer to years in history as before and after COVID as B.C. and A.C.?  Yes the vaccine provides badly needed hope but before we can truly say the pandemic is over the losses in life and more will be staggering.

With that said what we really need is to find joy in even the smallest things to help us through the dark times ahead.  I have noticed in recent weeks people have been posting pictures of sunsets on social media and just looking at them might give you a boost equal to a double shot of expresso.  In full disclosure I do not like expresso but I do enjoy colorful sunsets.

The other thing we can all do without great effort is try and be kind to one another.

I have made a conscious effort to hold the door open for people more so than ever before and wish them a nice day.  The other day I was at the Dunkin Donuts drive-thru and told the vehicle in front of me had paid for my coffee.  It was a white truck and I never saw the driver so I don’t know if it was someone I know or just a random act of kindness.

The next day I did the same for the person behind me who I did not know and maybe they’ll do the same for someone else.

Happy 2021. Here’s hoping we can find light at the end of the tunnel.
