Nobody likes getting into a car accident. But I feel like, these days, people are just itching to be angry right off the bat. Sometimes an accident is just that - an accident.

Yesterday I had a near-miss. It was a combination of faults - I missed something out of the corner of my eye, the other person was a little too eager to get across the intersection without yielding right of way.

We both stopped, and there was no contact.

But the other person started screaming, cursing, and even waving a cane at my car like he was going to smash my hood to bits.

Years ago I got into an accident that I was upset about, and something my mother said has stuck with me over the years:

"It's called an accident, not an 'on purpose'".

Sure, there are situations where one motorist is clearly to blame for recklessness, stupidity, and/or impatience. But sometimes it's not really anybody's fault.

It's an accident.

Even when the adrenaline is pumping and nerves are frayed, sometimes it's important to take a moment to assess the situation and deal with it calmly rather than flying off the handle.
