Let's take a moment to salute Detective Richard Jupinka with the Manchester Police Department in Lower Ocean County.

Det. Jupinka was eating lunch last Wednesday, July 14, when he became aware that a young girl at the next table was choking on her food. That's when Det. Jupinka saved the day.

The Manchester Police posted about the dramatic event on Monday.

The post says Detective Richard Jupinka was on-duty eating lunch at the Café Napoli restaurant, located in the Manchester Plaza shopping center when he observed a young child choking, and unable to breathe.

Det. Jupinka realized that the child’s life was in danger, and immediately went to the child’s table as her uncle attempted the Heimlich Maneuver, unsuccessfully.

At that point Det. Jupinka took over and began to perform the Heimlich Maneuver on the child. He was able to quickly clear the food obstruction from the child’s airway.

Once the obstruction was cleared, the child began breathing normally. The child’s family declined the need for medical attention and thanked the officer for his life saving actions.

Chief of Manchester Police Robert Dolan congratulated Det. Jupinka.

“Thankfully, one of our officers was in the right place at the right time. Had he not been there, this incident could have ended much differently.”

The remarkable thing about watching the short surveillance video of the detective in action is how quickly he reacts and how quickly he saves the girl's life.

The whole episode takes barely 30 seconds. Clearly, there is no time to waste in a situation like this, but, WOW! That was some quick thinking and acting, Detective! Well done.
