An early Saturday morning fire destroyed a Beachwood home belonging to a Pine beach police officer.

Flames started at the home located on the 600 block of Ship Avenue just after 1:30 Saturday morning and smoke was still coming from the home three hours later.

Beachwood Mayor Ronald Roma confirmed the house belonged to a Pine Beach police officer. The officer and his family were able to get out safely, however the home is considered to be a total loss.

The name of the officer was not disclosed by Roma.

Two dogs including a K-9 were rescued from the home and taken by Beachwood First Aid to the Associated Humane Hospital in Tinton Falls. Both dogs are expected to be okay.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
