A New Jersey lawmaker who has led the charge against red light cameras has launched an online petition drive to end the red light camera pilot program immediately.

“This is a way for people to do something concrete, put their name on this petition, encourage other people to sign it and get a groundswell of people to do so,” says Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon.

He adds there is overwhelming evidence “that red light cameras are a scam – they are not designed to increase safety and they don’t increase safety, we know that definitively."

O’Scanlon and others believe the real reason why many Garden State towns have signed up to participate in the pilot program is because it’s a money-maker.
