Before I tell you about a bartender who irked me, let me state for the record that I believe in tipping and usually follow the "buck per drink" rule.  Okay, now that that's said, here's what happened during a recent trip to a theatre.

During intermission, feeling really thirsty from a salty meal I had just had, I was craving a drink of water.  I ordered the bottle.  The bartender said "4 dollars please."  I handed him a 5 dollar bill.  He said, holding the money in the air, "Do you want the change?"

In the heat of the moment, not wanting to hold up the other people in the line, I said, "no" and walked away knowing he just made a nice tip for handing me a bottle of water.  Like I mentioned earlier, I would have given him a dollar tip anyway.  What bugged me was that he seemed to expect to pocket a buck for every bottle.

It almost felt like a pressure technique he used. As though he knew people like me would just say, "no, keep the change" and move on.

I would have felt better if he had gone to the register, keyed in the transaction, handed me the change and let me decide what to do.

Am I being too sensitive?  Or does this guy's sense of entitlement rub you the wrong way too?
