The American Red Cross is offering assistance to those in Newtown in the wake of last week's school massacre. They are providing food, water, emotional support and grief counseling to families, first responders and the community.

"Sometimes it is not much more a friendly person to sit and listen, offer a hug or to hold a hand, but we are glad to be there and offer some kind of comfort during this time," said Paul Shipman, spokesman for the Red Cross in Connecticut.

"We have had a number of people come in and visit, I think its a time when the community really wants to be together," he added.

Shipman says they will stay on site in Newtown for as long as they are needed.

"There is no timetable for us, we know this will be a long recovery and we really appreciate all the other groups reaching out to us as well, its a national response."

A group called Therapy Dogs International of New Jersey also brought some of their four-legged friends to Connecticut to help comfort people during this tragic time. A woman from Iowa also made her way through New Jersey where she baked 1,000 pies before packing up and heading to Newtown to drop them off.
