Police Chief Mike Mastronardy says the problems that began after 7:21 p.m. were caused by an electrical malfunction forcing them to back off some 450 vehicles from the span and detouring them through Fisher Boulevard, Hooper Avenue and over the Mantoloking Bridge, under the direction of Sergeant Scott Moeller.  He adds two vehicles, a tractor trailer and an Ocean Ride bus had to be backed down a major portion of the bridge.

Mastronardy says the State Department of Transportation fixed the electrical problem at 9:21 p.m. when they got down to about a dozen vehicles.

He sends a thank you to motorist, whom he says were very cooperative during a very difficult situation.
