I’m certainly part of the crowd that doesn’t like to rush summer, still cringing when I see “Back to School” things, Halloween candy, or pumpkin spice anything.  But, if there is anything that is a welcome sight and sound to me, it’s the students who are back at their respective high schools practicing the music and the moves for the upcoming fall marching band season.  The band camps are in progress or just ending, and the halftime shows and competition packages are taking shape.

There are quite a few schools here on the Shore that host shows featuring our local bands, and we’ll certainly keep you updated in our Hometown Happenings pages.  But many schools will be participating once again in the Tournament of Bands competition that brings together not just high schools from here at the Shore, but from all around the region.  Here are some local competition dates for 2019

9/14 – Manchester High School

9/21 – Matawan High School

9/21 – Southern Regional High School

9/28 – Brick Memorial High School

9/28 – Egg Harbor Township High School

10/5 – Toms River East High School

10/19 – Toms River North High School

The complete schedule and the bands that are participating can be found here:

To me, this is one of the best activities that the students participate in, forming bonds with their bandmates, working as a group, learning music.  They put in a lot of hard work, and appreciate all the support, not just from parents.  And band parents, by the way, are the BEST!  Some of the schools may be raising funds for trips, so if you have a chance, please contribute.

Now…who’s playing “Malaguena” this year?
