Did You Know About New Jersey’s November Earthquake Of 1783?

A quiet November night in the Garden State in 1783 was interrupted by the ground shaking. Turns out it was the worst earthquake to ever strike New Jersey directly.

The earthquake measures 5.3 on the Richter scale and occurred in the West New York City section of New Jersey, according to shorenewstoday.com, and it could be felt in neighboring states, including New York and Pennsylvania, and it happened on November 29th,1793.

I'm pretty sure none of us remember that one, but many of us remember the ground shaking around here a little over six years ago, on August 23, 2011. It scared many in the Garden State and caused some building evacuations, but caused no structural damage in the state, according to nj.com.

And believe it or not, we've reportedly had dozens of earthquakes sine, whether we feel them or not. Experts say anything below a 2.0 probably wouldn't be felt at all, and most in our area are pretty mild.

I remember the 2011 ground shaking, as many of us do, but it was so minor, I wasn't sure what it was at all. According to an article at nj.com, the intensity in New Jersey for this quake was about a 3. I can't even begin to imagine what a 5.3 felt like here in the Garden State way back in 1793.
