First Assistant Prosecutor Marc LeMieux told the Asbury Park Press the child's injuries were not life-threatening and that she was treated and released from the hospital.

The girl was caught in the cross fire of a shooting between Asbury Park Patrolman Terrance McGhee and a 20-year-old man, according to LeMieux.

Officer McGhee approached the man at the corner of Atkins and Springwood Avenues around 7:19 p.m., when he felt a gun on the man. LeMieux said the man then fled and fired at McGhee, who then returned fire and struck the man, according to the Asbury Park Press.

The unidentified man is hospitalized with injuries, but is expected to survive, according to LeMieux. He said McGhee was not shot, but was taken to the hospital to be examined.

A gun was found at the scene, according to LeMieux.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Michael Bonanno of the Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit at 800 533-7443.
