Brick police are warning residents to be on alert, especially those with small children and pets, after a rabid racoon was discovered last week in the Birchwood Park section of the Township on Redwood Drive.

Patch.com reports the Jersey Shore Animal Center picked up the animal on November 15. It was euthanized and a sample was sent to the Ocean County Health Department, where officials confirmed on November 21, the racoon tested positive for rabies.

It's unknown if any of the cats, or other area wildlife may have been infected.

Residents who observe any animals acting out of the ordinary are urged to contact the Brick Township Police Department at 732-262-1100 or the Jersey Shore Animal Center at 732-920-1600. if you observe any animals who are acting out of the ordinary.
