State police said the minivan became engulfed after a crash on the southbound side near Exit 74 late this morning. The only occupants were the infant and mother.

According to the Asbury Park Press, Beach Haven Fire Lieutenant Pat O'Donnell, traveling through the vicinity, and the yet-to-be-identified Lacey firefighter leaped in to action, containing the flames with extinguishers just enough to allow the volunteer to reach the infant trapped inside.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
