Deputy Chief Anthony Salerno told NJ.com that Lt. David DeSane was on his way to meet walking officers he was training when he stopped the suspects around 10 p.m..

As Lt. DeSane struggled with one of the male suspects who had a gun, Salerno said a teen struck the officer above the eye with a sharp object, believed to a knife. The suspects fled on foot.

He was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for treatment.

The incident comes a little more than a week after an Asbury Park police officer was stabbed while responding to a disorderly person call on Main Street.
