GALLOWAY — Two people were airlifted from a boat after it ran aground near Little Egg Inlet Saturday night, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

According to Coast Guard officials, a request for assistance was received by watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay at 9 p.m. Two people contacted the station after their 36-foot catamaran went aground, stranding them.

Crews from the Delaware Bay sector launched a 29-foot Response Boat-Small crew from the Coast Guard Station in Beach Haven. Officials say an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City also responded.

When the helicopter arrived at the scene, crew members hoisted the two people aboard the catamaran into the aircraft and transported them to Air Station Atlantic City.

“Having properly functioning communication devices, like a fully charged cell phone in a waterproof container, and a marine-band radio help boaters in situations like this,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Christopher Brady, an operation duty officer at Air Station Atlantic City. “These boaters did the right thing, reaching out to the Coast Guard before their situation got any worse.”
