A lockdown at Yale University has been lifted and police have declared the campus and the city of New Haven as "safe" following a daylong search for a gunman.

3:50 p.m. Chief is leaning towards this being a hoax. "We're going to find who did this and put handcuffs on them," says Esserman. He makes no apology for the reaction. He would not characterize the caller's words as  "clear and concise."

3:45 p.m. - New Haven's Police Chief Dean M. Esserman promises to find whoever made the phone call about a gunman and to charge them with whatever he can. "In this day and age, it's better to over react than under react. No shots, no injuries, no weapons found in/around Yale University," says the Chief.

3:15 p.m. - Yale University has lifted the shelter-in-place except for Old Campus and Calhoun College ccording to their emergency management website.

2:00 p.m. - Police are going door-to-door and will slip their Yale ID under the door as many dorm rooms do not have peep holes says Hartman at the press conference.

1:55 p.m. - Live video of the campus shows SWAT team members entering a building with their guns drawn. Police spokesman David Hartman says that a building-by-building search continues. Hartman notes that there are a number of people remaining on campus despite the campus being closed for Thanksgiving break.

1:30 p.m. - Nearby Gateway Community College is also on a lockdown.

1:20 p.m. - New Haven Police spokesman David Hartman at a press conference reviewed the events of the day and say they do not have a description of a suspect. New Haven, Yale, state police, FBI, ATF are assisting in search.

12:48 p.m. - New Haven Police say the anonymous caller said his roommate was on his way to campus "to shoot people."

12:40 p.m. - Yale says no shots have been fired and there are no injuries reported.

12:35 p.m. - 2 witnesses have seen a man with a long rifle on the Yale campus according to NBC Connecticut.

12:11 p.m. - Media covering the story noticed a person being put into an ambulance and was asked not to show the footage. NBC Connecticut describes the person as a witness.

11:57 a.m. The Yale website reportsthe gunman has been spotted on the school's Old Campus and waving people away from the area.

11:50 a.m. - Many people in stores and businesses are stuck inside with the doors locked and taking shelter according to WTNH TV.

A tweet sent out by the university  ordered staff and students to shelter in place at 11:45  a.m. until further notice. Streets around the New Haven, Connecticut campus are blocked as well and a SWAT team is on the scene.

No sighting of a gunman walking around campus have been made according to a message posted on the school's Emergency Management website. New Haven Police received an anonymous call from a phone booth in the 300 block of Columbus Avenue reporting a person on campus with a gun according to the post.

The schools' Facebook page says most of the campus is on Thanksgiving break this week and most classes are canceled. There are a handful of classes still being held.

Today's events come less than a month after reports of a gunman on the campus of Central Connecticut University near Hartford that turned out to be a man in a Halloween campus.
