NEPTUNE TOWNSHIP — A North Carolina woman who died while in the custody of Neptune Township police was arrested in a strip club parking lot hours before her death.

In new details released by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, spokesman Charles Webster said Katie Lee Thomas was arrested in the parking lot of the Centerfolds Gentleman’s Club at the Asbury traffic circle on Route 35 the morning of August. 17 at 8:40 a.m. and charged with a disorderly persons offense of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Webster said Thomas was taken to Neptune Police headquarters, where she was found unconscious and not breathing. CPR was administered and she was taken to nearby Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Webster said.

After CPR was administered, Thomas was taken to nearby Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Webster said preliminary results of an ongoing investigation showed there was no physical abuse of Thomas by police and that she had an “unconfirmed medical episode” while in custody. The exact time of that episode is not known, according to Webster.

A  toxicology report will not be back for another eight weeks.

A GoFundMe page was created to raise funds to return her body to North Carolina.

"(Katie's parents) Angie, Jeff and the family are devastated and my hopes are this fundraiser could relieve them of some burdens that they suddenly have upon them," Tina Fuller Thomas wrote.

Thomas also had a young son named Landen according to her obituary.

It also described her as passionate about photography and modeling, and said she had "a gypsy soul and danced through life to the beat of her own song."
