With the unofficial kickoff to summer a little over a week away, the tourists will be coming down, the boardwalks will be packed, and the parkway will be a parking lot.  The one big question is will you go swimming?

As many of you know, a 3,500-pound great white shark named Mary Lee has been swimming up the Jersey coast line all week.  She seems to have already swam past our area, but knowing that the shark with almost 37,000 followers on Twitter is near our water, will that deter you from swimming Memorial Day weekend?

Although you don’t think about it often, there are thousands of species in the water that we are swimming with daily that doesn’t seem to bother us, but because Mary Lee makes the news, everyone freaks out.  Here are some fun facts for you to think about:

  • The odds of getting attacked and killed by a shark are 1 in 3,748,067
  • The odds of getting into a car accident is 1 in 84
  • The odds of getting struck by lightning is  1 in 79,746

If Mary Lee decides to swim back towards us within the next week, there is a great chance that she will let you be and keep on swimming.  With that, enjoy the beach, go for a swim and enjoy the beginning of Summer 2015 as it is right around the corner.

Will you be swimming in the ocean Memorial Day weekend with Mary Lee?  Let us know in the comment section below
