Will NJ have more Powerball luck?
Would there be a better way to kick off 2016 than to win Wednesday night's Powerball drawing, which has an estimated $450 million prize?
"It's currently the fourth-largest jackpot, so far, and the sixth-largest jackpot in any lottery game in U.S. history," said Judy Drucker, New Jersey Lottery Chief Communications Officer.
While it may seem like these mega-jackpots are more common, the last time the top prize reached this stratosphere was last February when it climbed to $564 million.
"It's been quite a while since we've had a big jackpot, so I think everybody is really excited," Drucker said.
Nobody has hit Powerball since Nov. 4, and the jackpot will continue to grow if there is no winner Wednesday at 10:59 p.m.
The current jackpot has a cash value of $275 million.
Drucker said the huge prize has stirred up a lot of excitement this week with over $1 million in sales reported on Tuesday alone.
Although the odds of winning are very slim at just 1 in 292 million, it is not unprecedented for a New Jerseyan to cash the top prize.
Back in 2013, Passaic's Pedro Quezada won the Powerball drawing, which had a top prize of $338 million.
"We're very lucky here in New Jersey and we're looking forward to another big win," Drucker said.
