Firefighters were battling a wildfire on the Burlington-Ocean County border that had consumed nearly 350 acres by mid-Friday morning.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service reports the fire broke out late Thursday afternoon in Woodland Township is north of Penn State Forest near Baptist Road and Old Tuckerton. Fire equipment was positioned along Route 72 all night as part of the fire fighting effort.

The fire was 75% contained as of 8 a.m. of Friday morning according to the FFS thanks to the efforts of 40 fire fighters who used 8 trucks and 6 water tenders as well as a tractor/plow unit. No structures were threatened by the fire according to the FFS.

The fire could also be smelled in parts of Ocean County as winds blew Thursday night and early Friday out of the southwest.

Meteorologist Dan Zarrow said overnight rain didn't amount to much.

"It was just a few sprinkles and a few hundredths of an inch in the bucket, at most," Zarrow said. He expected a cold front would dry out the atmosphere and bring a gusty wind of at least 20 mph, making the wildfire danger higher on Friday than it was on Thursday.
