Why did Gov. Christie miss Obama at Rutgers Commencement?

Gov. Chris Christie had a reason for missing from Commencement at Rutgers University and President Obama's commencement speech.

The governor was 20 miles away at Princeton University, watching his son's baseball team, the Princeton Tigers, defeat Yale 2-1 to win the Ivy League championship in the second of two His son Andrew, a senior, is Princeton's catcher. He was 0-2 in the deciding game.

At a press conference on May 5, Christie said he had "every intention" of being at Rutgers commencement but it all depended on how the Tigers did in their playoff series with Yale.

"If Princeton can win their two games on the 14th and win the Ivy League Championship, then I'll be at Rutgers on the 15th. If there is a deciding game on the 15th at Yale and my son's the starting catcher at the deciding game for the Ivy League Championship in his senior year, I'm going to Yale," Christie said, according to NJ Advance Media.

With rain in the forecast for Saturday afternoon, however, it was decided to play only one game on Saturday meaning that there was going to be at least one game on Sunday.

Christie did not tweet on his official Twitter account about the game or Commencement but did retweet the NCAA's tweet.

Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno attended the Commencement ceremony and sat on the main stage.

Princeton has a guaranteed spot in the NCAA Division II baseball tournament which starts on Thursday.
