Spring's arrival and warmer temperatures have little effect on pertussis - better known as whooping cough.

Numbers are on the rise in Ocean County, say health officials who continue Tdap vaccination clinics through April. The Tdap vaccine covers tetanus and diptheria as well as pertussis.

The schedule is:

  • OCHD Headquarters, 175 Sunset Avenue, Toms River: April 11, 9 AM - 12 Noon; April 23, 4 - 7 PM.
  • OCHD Southern Site, 333 Haywood Road, Manahawkin: April 9 & 17, 1 - 4 PM; April 26, 4 - 6:40 PM.
  • OCHD Northern Site, 1771 Madison Avenue, Lakewood: April 10, 12, & 24, 2 - 4 PM; April 13, 16, 18, 20, 25, 27, 8 AM - 12 Noon.

Tetanus and diptheria boosters are recommended for all adults, including those beyond age 65. If you've never had a Tdap inoculation, say health officials, it can serve as the booster for tetanus and diphtheria protection.

The shot is also advised for adults who will have regular contact with children younger than 12 months, and for new mothers who have never been administered a Tdap vaccine, as soon as possible after giving birth.
