Police say Thomas E. Graf, 53, of Whiting, was driving his 2001 Dodge Dakota pickup along Route 539 Saturday morning, about to turn left onto Lincoln Boulevard. According to police, the 2006 Peterbilt driven by Thomas Manning, 63, of East Windsor, plowed into the pickup and careened into nearby woods.

Graf was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for treatment. Manning was treated on scene for minor injuries.

The investigation and extrication of vehicles resulted in a multiple-hour shutdown of the highway between Harry Wright Boulevard and Hegstrom Avenue.
