I would like a pose a question for which I cannot find a convincing answer.

If you follow social media you likely know flies on the beach have been a big problem this week, especially in the morning hours when during this stretch of hot weather the wind has been coming mainly out of the west.

The good news for those who went to the beach later in the day was that often the wind switched and drove the flies away.

Now comes the question: where do they go?

It almost seems like a switch gets turned on, wind shifts and flies leave but for where?  Do they go hang out somewhere waiting for the west wind to return so they can resume biting on ankles?  Inquiring minds want to know.

Okay so we are heading to Labor Day weekend and I’ll save my tears for that until afterwards but to me there is only one consolation and that is the start of the football season.  While the NFL does not play for real until next weekend we have college and even high school football this weekend.

The high school season in the Shore Conference officially began Thursday with Mater Dei Prep rolling past Pinelands 41-8 and Middletown South suffering a 62-14 loss to Pennsylvania power Coatesville.

There are four other games tonight, including Brick Memorial at Central which is the Jersey Mike’s Game of the Week and can be heard on 92.7 WOBM and also viewed on shoresportsnetwork.com.

Also tonight, Red Bank Catholic visits St. John Vianney in a battle of the shore’s preseason top two teams, Lacey is at Ocean and Long Branch travels south to Hammonton.

The Monmouth Hawks open the college football season tonight at Eastern Michigan…a 6:30 kickoff which you can hear on Beach Radio 1160/1310AM.

And a baseball note to wrap things up.  The Lakewood BlueClaws clinched the South Atlantic League’s second-half title last night to go along with their first-half championship.

The BlueClaws 85th win of the season sets a franchise record and they return to FirstEnergy Park tonight for a four-game series with Delmarva that concludes the regular season.

They’ll open the playoffs on the road Wednesday.
