What was John Travolta doing in Ocean County?
Celebrity Scientologist John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston were in Bay Head on Saturday for the dedication of Church Founder L. Ron Hubbard's former home at 666 East Avenue, according to Borough Mayor William Curtis.
"The Bay Head Historical Society awarded them {Scientologists} a plaque and an Outstanding Service to the Community because they restored the house to the way it was in 1949 and 1950," said Curtis.
Hubbard authored "Dianetics:The Modern Science of Mental Health" while living in Bay Head. It was published in 1950 and topped the New York Times bestseller list.
The home is open for tours as a Heritage site.
Mayor Curtis said he and other residents enjoyed meeting the celebrity couple and touring the home.
He doesn't feel curiosity about the controversial religion and stereotypes perceiving it as a "cult," will impact the beach community.
"I have nothing against the individuals and I do not think that it will create any undue traffic in the town of Bay Head," Curtis said, adding, "I think it was a good thing for Bay Head and a nice recognition for the home to be restored the way it was."
