WOODBRIDGE — Parkway drivers can expect another day of delays on one of its busiest stretches Sunday.

The Turnpike Authority is replacing a bridge deck in the local lanes over Bordentown Avenue in Sayreville and is merging five lanes into one about eight miles away at Exit 129 for the New Jersey Turnpike. It created big delays on Saturday and it took about an hour to travel through the delays which began as far north as the area of the Metropark train station.

"When you're putting multiple lanes into one lane it's obviously going to have a tremendously negative effect on traffic,"  New Jersey Traffic North's Bob Williams said.

The ramp from southbound Route 440 (Route 287) to the southbound Parkway is also closed. Delays developed on Route 440 as well as the detour back to the Parkway on Routes 9 and 35.

"By replacing the deck in a weekend long high-intensity construction cycle, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority is able to avoid long-term lane closures that would disrupt traffic in the area for months," the Turnpike Authority said in a statement. The closures and detours are expected to be lifted by 7 a.m. on Monday morning.

Highlights of the weekend's closures:

  • Five right lanes southbound will be closed between Exit 129 for the New Jersey Turnpike and the Raritan tolls.
  • The Parkway’s local (outer)  lanes will be closed, forcing all traffic to the express (inner) lanes. A temporary crossover to the inner lanes will be in place. The ramp from Chevalier Avenue in Sayreville to the southbound Parkway will also be closed through the weekend. This closure will impact drivers heading to the southbound Parkway from the Victory Circle in South Amboy.
  • The ramp from southbound Route 440 (Route 287) to the southbound Parkway will be closed to alleviate traffic.  Drivers will be detoured to Route 9 and Route 35 to rejoin the Parkway at Exit 117 and Lloyd Road in Matawan.
