Water's flowing from taps in a section of Toms River about eight hours after a water main burst, but people in 24 homes and four sections of an apartment complex there are being advised to boil it for the next 24 to 48 hours.

The conduit under Vaughn Avenue affected homes between Windsor Avenue and Deer Hollow Lane, just north of Route 37, as well as part of the Terrace View Apartments. United Water Toms River shut down all service to depressurize the main for repairs.

Traffic detours continued as the pavement above the main was refilled.

The addresses along Vaughn are all between 534 and 593. Terrace View buildings A, D, F and G are also affected.

Customers in the impacted area are under instructions to bring tap water to a rolling boil for at least a minute if it's to be consumed, to be used in food preparation, dental hygiene or medications.

Sample testing routinely takes 24 to 48 hours, according to the company.
