WATCH: Moments after NJ infant freed from hot car

HOWELL - Newly released surveillance video shows the retired sheriff's officer who used a sledgehammer to free a 4-month-old from a locked car bringing the child into the vestibule of the Kohl's store on Route 9.

Steve Eckel, of Jackson, can be seen rushing to get the child out of the heat. He places the child, resting in a bassinet, down on a bench while a second person follows closely behind.

Sarah Mazzone, who told New Jersey 101.5's Jeff Deminski she soaked the infant's clothes in cold water, can be seen running off to get a bottle of water.

Eckel picks up the child as Mazzone returns and they continue to care for the child.

The baby's mother, Karen B. Gruen, 33, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child after Eckel and Mazzone said they found the screaming baby alone in the sweltering car Monday afternoon when temperatures were in the 80s.

New Jersey 101.5 reported Wednesday that Gruen is a speech therapist at Oak Street Elementary School in Lakewood. Endangering the welfare of a child is one of the many convictions that can disqualify applicants for teaching and child-care facility jobs in the state.

Marc Zitomer, attorney for the Lakewood Board of Education, said the district cannot comment on personnel issues. He did not know if the matter will be addressed at a future BOE meeting.
