Temperatures will remain in the 80s with the chance of scattered rain for both today and tomorrow, but a big chance is coming midweek.

The weather community continues to clamor about now-Tropical Depression Ana, an early season tropical system that brought wind, waves, and rain to the Carolinas this weekend. As of the 5 a.m. update, Ana is moving north-northeast at 4 mph and will soon start to head back out to sea. It’s really not a strong storm at all, with maximum sustained winds of 15 mph (according to the National Hurricane Center).

As Ana parallels the Atlantic coast later today, the radius of the storm will clip the Garden State. However, the big precipitation shield at that time will be on the southeast side of the system - the “out-to-sea” side. The result? There still won’t be much weather impact for New Jersey from Ana... just some extra clouds and enhancement of a few showers and thunderstorms.

However, it’s worthwhile to keep an eye on the sky for those few storms today. Even though they will be widely scattered, I’m fairly confident someone in New Jersey will see at least a little bit of rain today. Furthermore, because of all the humidity and the warm temperatures in the 80s expected today, the atmosphere will be marginally unstable... so any storms that do form could in fact become strong or severe rather quickly. As the National Weather Service says, “When thunder roars, head indoors!” You don’t want to be caught out in the middle of a golf course if a thunderstorm comes rolling through suddenly.

Tuesday: Cold Front Approaches

We’ll look forward to one more very warm, humid day tomorrow. I have included "a few showers” in the forecast. There will be a slight chance of some residual showers or drizzle Tuesday morning, before skies clear away to partly sunny or mostly sunny skies. And there’s an even slighter chance of an isolated shower on Tuesday afternoon as a cold front approaches. This rain is far from a sure bet - we may very well stay completely or mostly dry tomorrow.

By Tuesday afternoon, winds will kick up dramatically ahead of the cold front that will usher in cooler, drier air Tuesday night into Wednesday.

The Rest of the Week

Wednesday will be a very different weather day than the past several, as high temperatures dive from the 80s on Tuesday to the 60s on Wednesday. With a continued gusty wind at 15-25 mph on Wednesday, it will feel a bit brisk... although mid to upper 60s will be just a few degrees below normal for mid May. And the high humidity will be gone.

By Thursday, winds will be lighter, skies will be mostly to partly sunny, and temperatures bump to about average (near 70°). (It should be a very nice Spring day.) Friday looks OK too, although increasing clouds will lead to a rain chance Friday night through the day Saturday.
