Wallenda Walks Tightrope Over Atlantic City [VIDEO]

Nik Wallenda can keep calling himself the King of the High Wire. Today, in front of an estimated 150,000 spectators, the world record holder walked 1,300 feet in length, more than 100 feet above the Atlantic City beach. He did it without a harness – just a balancing pole.

Wallenda’s wire was hoisted by two cranes between the Atlantic Club Casino Hotel and the Tropicana Casino & Resort.

The weather cooperated this afternoon. Wind was an obvious concern along the shore, but Wallenda said only two gusts caused him minor trouble towards the end of his death-defying walk.

Wallenda said the start of the walk offered the most trouble. In fact, he took a few steps and then backed off, before he began his official trek across the sky.

“There was so much sand caked into that cable from yesterday when they laid it out,” Wallenda explained. “So I took a shoe off and backed up to see if I wanted to actually go barefoot.”

He decided against going barefoot, and the sand didn’t prove to be a factor for the next 25-30 minutes.

Wallenda’s feat kicks off the start of a six-week acrobatic performance at the Tropicana from August 12 through September 22.
