Walking in a March Wonderland
The winter that just won’t end continues and for maybe the only time over the last couple of months it’s South Jersey who will take a bigger hit then the northern part of the state.
If you’re an optimist then you’ll take some comfort in that once we get to the end of the week we should be into the 40’s for the foreseeable future although that’s where we should be right now.
Meanwhile this Friday marks the opening of the spring sports season for high school athletics. That’s the day when baseball, softball, lacrosse teams can officially begin practice. Sounds like they better prepare to for life inside the gymnasium for the start.
By the way the NJSIAA High School Basketball Tournament was supposed to begin tonight but all of the games have been postponed until Tuesday.
Point Pleasant Beach and Manasquan High Schools are about 3 miles apart on each side of the Ocean and Monmouth County border and they are home to the reigning Shore Conference Basketball Tournament champions.
On Saturday at Monmouth University Pt. Beach beat CBA to win the boys title for the first time in school history just after Manasquan routed St. Rose to claim the girls crown for the first time since 1983. Both teams were helped by the fact they might have the best players at the shore in Matt Farrell and Marina Mabrey.
A big issue with sports on all levels has been concussions and Thursday night Community Medical Center will host a program aimed at athletic trainers, coaches, athletic directors, school and hospital nurses. Concussion Management and Return to Play will be discussed in a program run by the Matthew J. Morahan, III Health Assessment Center for Athletes at Barnabas Health.
Speakers will include recently-retired Giants offensive lineman David Diehl, Neurosurgeon Dr. John Sarris and John Gallucci, Medical Coordinator for Major League Soccer. Registration begins at 6pm Thursday night at CMC….to RSVP you are asked to
Couple of post-Oscar thoughts: Ellen DeGeneres was terrific as host of the show and I’d be okay with her doing it just about every year and I was really happy that Matthew McConaughey won for Best Actor because he was outstanding in Dallas Buyers Club.
