On Muhammad Ali's birthday last week, I was reminded of the time he said, "Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth."  I'm still thinking of these words today, as the country recognizes Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  If you'd like to participate in MLK Day of Service, here's a link where you can type in your zip code and find a volunteer opportunity near where you live:    http://www.jerseycares.org.

Studies have shown that volunteering has numerous benefits, not only to the people BEING helped, but those DOING the helping!  http://www.helpguide.org/life/volunteer_opportunities_benefits_volunteering.htm

Even if you're too busy to donate any time today, maybe you'll consider joining a service organization like Rotary or Kiwanis?  There are clubs in many parts of Ocean County.  I've been active in Rotary since 2007 and it's really enriched my life.  I'm proud of the work Rotary does locally (literacy programs, book and coat donations, park clean-ups, provide transportation for the disabled, etc.) and internationally (immunizing kids against polio, providing clean water systems, and more.)  As I look back on the times I've volunteered, they've all been memorable, awareness-raising experiences that I'm grateful for.  Time and money always seem tight, but there's something about volunteering that makes me feel it's all worth it...one small way maybe I can help make the world a better place.  On this MLK Day of Service, I hope you'll consider clicking on some of these links, or contacting your school, church, library, shelter, etc., and ask how you can help.
