Facebook certainly has its faults and it’s easy to make fun of those who are seemingly addicted to the online social networking source and share just about everything with their so-called “friends.”

However it does have benefits, especially when you are trying to communicate with many at the same time. My father has been dealing with health issues and challenges over the last week and is now being treated at Community Medical Center. I was not looking for pity or prayers when I posted something about him yesterday afternoon but rather just wanted to inform friends of mine and his. It was certainly easier than making phone calls.

As of this writing some 130 people offered well-wishes, comments of support and prayers, including those who know him from his many years of operating on the Seaside Heights boardwalk. To say the least I was blown away and greatly appreciative. I hope there is an opportunity to relay those messages to him as it would mean quite a bit.

Affectionately known as “The Bear” at age 86 he’s had a pretty good run until the last year or so. Meantime the doctors, nurses and staff at Community have been simply tremendous and we feel like he’s in very good hands. The minute he starts flirting with the nurses we’ll know he’s on the comeback trail.

A selected group of student leaders at Central Regional High School will be meeting with former Manalapan High School and Penn State football player and Captain Lee Rubin this morning in the wake of the hazing scandal at Sayreville High School. Assistant Principal Tom Gallahue said he got the idea to reach out to Rubin (a former player of his) after reading my Hometown View in which I made comparisons between what’s happening at Sayreville with what took place at Penn State a few years ago.

Rubin is a popular public speaker and will meet this morning with student officers as well as leaders from Central athletic teams, band and Junior ROTC. He will do a presentation on anti-bullying which obviously has been in the news more than ever over the last few weeks.  For more on Rubin you can visit LeeRubinSpeaks.com

Gallahue invited me to attend but unfortunately I will not be able to. I congratulate him and the school for taking a pro-active approach to one of today’s significant issues.
