Police ask anyone with police-related matters to relay to call the Ocean County Sheriff's communications center, 732-929-2010, until the interruption is repaired.

Calls to 911 remain emergency-only.

Police indicated that the situation involves a "regional issue" with Verizon, but didn't directly point to the strike by unionized workers amid stalled contract talks.

They also offered no indication of whether the snag affects any other Verizon customers in the township.

 

The walkout that began last week involved nearly 40,000 members of the Communication Workers of America from Massachusetts to Virginia. Verizon has brought in substitutes.
