22-year-old Rainer Bendixen of Bay Head, 38-year-old Jason Reimer of Middletown, and a third crew member were able to put on their survival suits in time, according to the Asbury Park Press.

The Associated Press reported Coast Guard officials said the captain died after panicking and jumping in the water without his immersion suit.

The three crew members were able to cling to life rings as the boat sunk about a mile off the coast of Fire Island.

Officials told the Associated Press the Sea Bear was behind two other tugboats heading back to base when it started sinking.

Authorities identified the captain as Donald Maloney. His body was recovered a few hours after the tug sank.
