Two drivers, whose cars collided on Route 72 in Stafford as this morning's rush hour ended, sustain injuries serious enough for hospitalization.

The crash involving Kelly Layton, 41, of Philadelphia, and Howard Sackman, 75, of Barnegat, occcurred at about 9 AM, according to township police.

According to Traffic Safety Officer Justin Pascale, Layton was headed west on the highway, and Sackman was eastbound. Sackman turned left, across oncoming traffic, in an attempt to reach Ivy Lane, police said.

Both were rushed to Atlanticare Trauma Center in Atlantic City, Layton with a chest injury and Sackman with a head wound. Police said that Sackman wore no seat restraint.

No charges have been filed, pending completion of Pascale's report.

The crash drew response from Stafford Township volunteer firefighters and emergency medical technicians, MONOC paramedics and medevac helicopter, and a South Star medevac chopper. Traffic edged past the crash site without a detour.
