The second of two pedestrian accident victims in Toms River Tuesday night lost his grip on life, hours after the first died instantly.

Matthew Farrington, 51, of Forked River lingered several hours at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune before succumbing to his injuries, police said. He was hit by a 2014 Dodge Ram pickup driven by Shawn McNamara, 30, of Toms River, at about 7:47 PM while crossing Route 37's northbound lanes at Coolidge Avenue, police said.

Just prior to that incident, at 7:31 PM, Daniel Gunnells, 43, of Manchester, was run down by a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro driven by Robert Mendez, 63, of Lakehurst, while pushing a shopping cart across Indian Head Road at Green Drive. Gunnells died on impact, according to authorities.

Preliminary reports indicate that both drivers followed green traffic signals, and that neither pedestrian was within a crosswalk, police said.

Officers Mark Nater and Frank Palino are handling the investigation of the Route 37 incident, and Officer David Baroshek heads the probe of the Indian Head Road crash.
