Turnpike Construction To Cause Delays Tonight

Construction on the New Jersey Turnpike on Saturday night and Sunday morning is expected to cause long delays for weekend drivers at one of the most congested parts of the roadway.

The Turnpike will begin closing southbound lanes of the Turnpike’s inner roadway starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday evening between exit 9 in New Brunswick and exit 8A in Cranbury  with more lanes in both the inner & outer roadways closed every hour.

By 10 p.m., the southbound outer roadway will be closed  from exit 14A in Newark  to exit 8A in Cranbury and only one lane will be available for all southbound traffic in the inner roadway from exit 9 in New Brunswick to 8A.

The Turnpike expects traffic to be at its worst on the Turnpike from 10p.m. to midnight on Saturday night.

When all lanes open on Sunday morning at 8 a.m., the inner and outer roadways will merge into one lane two miles north of the current location. The change will allow the roadway to be realigned in front of the Molly Pitcher service area to accommodate the $2.3 billion Turnpike widening project.

No construction is scheduled for the northbound lanes.

Drivers can get off the Turnpike at exit 9 and take Route 18 north to Route 1 south to get to Interstate 295 and Route 130 to Interstate 195. Route 18 south takes drivers to Route 9 to head into Monmouth County.

The widening project will extend the inner and outer lanes of the Turnpike from exit 8A to exit 6A for the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

New Jersey 101.5 Fast Traffic will have updates every 15 minutes and instantly on the traffic page at NJ1015.com
