Random thoughts and notes on a Monday after fighting a head cold or sinus infection all weekend long.

Never for a minute did I consider spending $100 to watch the so-called “Fight of the Century” and feeling lousy I was asleep before Mayweather and Pacquiao climbed into the ring.  It turned out pretty much as I expected and if that’s the “Fight of the Century” then boxing is in for a rough 85 years.  If there’s a rematch it should be held in the Pine Belt Arena with tickets going for $20 and shown on free TV.

  • On Friday during the Hometown View I picked “Firing Line” to win the Kentucky Derby and wrote down on a piece of paper to bet him in an exacta with “American Pharoah.”   So my daughter and I went to Favorites in Toms River later in the day and bet a few $1 trifecta boxes but I never did bet an exacta.  Another brilliant move on my part.
  • After a busy weekend the Ocean County Baseball Tournament is down to four teams and as usual with this event there were plenty of surprises. The biggest came Saturday when Southern stunned top-seed Toms River North but the Rams bowed out on Sunday when they lost to Barnegat who advances to next Saturday’s semi’s against surprising Brick Memorial, an upset winner over Jackson Liberty.  On the other side of the bracket Jackson Memorial and Toms River South both won on Sunday and will once again face one another in a big game in the month of May. Nothing new there.

Undefeated Southern has earned the top seed in the Shore Conference Boys Lacrosse Tournament which gets underway this week and will conclude next Monday with the championship game scheduled for Monmouth University.  The Rams begin their bid for the title against the winner of today’s play-in game between Brick and Middletown North.  Rumson, CBA and Manasquan round out the top four seeds.

  • After two years together Lindsay Vonn and Tiger Woods announced their break-up Sunday saying it was mutual and in part due to the demands of their hectic lives.  Both had nice things to say about one another but it sounds like the parting is permanent.
