Oyster Creek's got troubles, and the nuclear plant has nothing to do with it. But underwater tidal action has everything to do with it.

The creek itself has developed a shoal that is considered serious, on Barnegat Bay in the Forked River vicinity, according to information from U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Division 7, Southern Ocean County.

The trouble spot is described as south of the Oyster Creek entrance from the bay, on the Intracoastal Waterway, between Buoys 36 and 40.

Shoaling involves a buildup of the floor of the body of water, lessening clearance for watercraft and creating a potential navigational hazard.

Coast Guard officials advise boaters to reduce speed in the area, wear life jackets, post a lookout and maintain safe distances to allow for maneuvering through the shoaled section.
