Phyllis Scardena, 76, and her 87-year-old husband were transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune - she by ground, he by air - after the midday collision on Vermont Avenue at Cox Cro Road, police said.

The other driver, Nancy Bartley, 53, sustained minor injuries, police sais.

Township police, fire and emergency medical units arrived at about 11:30 AM. Investigators determined that Mrs. Scardena, with a red stop signal overhead, drove her 2004 Oldsmobile into the intersection to initiate a left turn onto Cox Cro Road,

Ms.Bartley, in a 2008 Dodge, with a green signal in her direction, broadsided the Oldsmobile on the driver's side, sending it spinning into a curb and a snow bank. It landed on the passenger's side in a front yard.

Pleasant Plains firefighters removed both. Police said that Mrs. Scardena's husband wore no seat restraints.

Mrs. Scardena was issued a summons for the traffic signal violation and is reportedly listed in good condition. Her husband was listed in stable condition, police said.

Toms River Township and Silverton emergency medical squads also responded.
