Duke-bound senior Karl Blum tossed a complete-game 5-hitter and struck out 6 for the Mariners, who used a four-run 3rd inning to build a 5-0 lead and take control of the game. Mike Miraglia’s three-run double was the big hit in the inning as North finished the season with a 20-7 record and for the first time in school history won the Shore Conference and Ocean County Tournament titles in the same season.

On their way to winning the SCT for the second time the Mariners knocked off a quartet of Ocean County teams, Central, Toms River South, Jackson Memorial and finally Jackson Liberty, who reached the finals for the first time ever.

In his 20th season at North Coach Ted Schelmay might have the #1 team at the shore as the Mariners closed the season with a rush and their two titles make for a nice resume.  Not to be ignored was the outstanding job Jim Rankin did in getting the Lions to the championship game after upsets of Red Bank Catholic and CBA.

Southern Regional will try and claim the NJSIAA Boys Volleyball Tournament of Champions tonight at South Brunswick High School.  The 34-4 Rams won the South Jersey section last week and face North Jersey, Section 1 champion Fair Lawn in the first round.  If Southern wins they meet the winner of the St. Joseph of Metuchen/Livingston match later in the evening.  Fair Lawn beat Southern in each of the last two NJSIAA Finals.

The 1st Annual Aaron Bosco Game Day is scheduled for this Saturday at Windward Beach in Brick.  The event is in honor of Aaron Bosco, a standout athlete at both Point Pleasant Beach High School and Rowan University who passed away suddenly in February of 2012 at the age of 38.

His family and friends have put together a day of games, music and food with proceeds to benefit an athletic scholarship in his name at Point Beach where he was an All-Shore football player and District wrestling champ.

Aaron then had an outstanding career at Rowan where he captained the football team and played in three National Championship games.   Saturday’s event at Windward Beach begins at noon and tickets will be available at the door.
