If you’ve watched an NFL game this month you have likely noticed that just about every participant wears something pink as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month
and in recent years that has spilled over to high school games as well.

The Toms River North Mariners Football Team and Cheer Squad is teaming up this month to help tackle cancer through “Roll Out The Ribbons” which is a cancer awareness campaign sponsored by Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch. While pink is clearly associated with breast cancer the “Roll Out The Ribbons” program promotes the fact there are colored ribbons associated with the fight against just about every type of cancer.

The Mariners Football Team & Cheer Squad is collecting donations of at least $1.00 at school for the different color ribbons which will then be tied along the home side fence of the football field for viewing. Ribbons can be customized with personalized messages and the effort to raise money and awareness as part of the program will be ramped up during North’s two home games in October.

The first is Friday night when the Mariners host rival Toms River East and the finale will be on October 31st when Brick visits Gernerd Field for what will be a Halloween Homecoming. For more information on the program you can visit rollouttheribbons.com.

It has not taken long for Bayville’s Lindsey Mahnken to make an impact on the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s soccer team. The freshman goalie out of Central Regional has been named the Empire 8 Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in seven weeks.

Mahnken allowed just one goal while the Ducks won back-to-back games last weekend and in 11 games has given up just a total of six goals while posting a 9-2 record. The former Golden Eagle was also named the ECAC Division III Upstate Rookie of the Week last night.

I received several comments about yesterday’s segment on the plethora of lawn signs that “decorate” (and I use that word with tongue in cheek) roadways and intersections throughout Ocean County, especially leading up to Election Day. In traveling over to Seaside yesterday I could not help but notice the signs on the grass divider that separates Route 37 through Pelican Island.

A few of the signs were falling apart and it did not exactly make the area look better. Then again, does anyone really care?
