TRENTON — Thunderstorms that rumbled through New Jersey in the early morning hours of Monday left thousands without power.

"It was quite the 'electric' night across South Jersey, with almost constant lightning and thunder from the storms that rolled through. Heavy rain caused pockets of flash flooding and a Tornado Warning was issued for Atlantic County, as a brief (unconfirmed) spin-up popped up on radar," according to Townsquare New Jersey Chief Meteorologist Dan Zarrow.

The storms also contained heavy rain, with nearly five inches falling in Washington Township in Gloucester County, and over four inches in Ship Bottom on Long Beach Island, according to the National Weather Service.

According to the respective outage maps of the state's major utilities, over 5,600 customers were in the dark as of 5:30 a.m.

  • JCP&L: 1,940 (mostly in Lambertville and in Holmdel & Marlboro)
  • PSE&G: 2,910 in Burlington County (Delanco, Willingboro and Delran)
  • ACE: 827 (mostly Ocean County)

The overnight storms also knocked down a tree onto NJ Transit's Montclair-Boonton Line, causing a suspension of service between Hackettstown and Mount Olive.
