A driver and passenger narrowly escape as their car erupts in flames after a Thursday morning crash in Toms River that left three people injured.

According to township police, the crash took place at about 7:30 AM at the intersection of Bay Lea Road and Lomell Lane.

Caitlin Russo, 27, of Toms River, was westbound on Bay Lea in a 2013 Ford and turning left onto Lomell Lane in front of a 2016 Chevrolet driven by 59-year-old George Delia, Jr.

Delia's car ignited on impact and the flames spread rapidly, police said. Volunteers of the Pleasant Plains Fire Company knocked the fire down while Toms River EMS staffers transported all three to Community Medical Center.

Police said that Russo suffered back pain, Delia incurred a hand injury and his rider was treated for a knee injury and possible internal injuries.
