A proposal to build a steel sea wall from the borough of Mantoloking to Brick Township, gets the green light from the federal government. According to the Asbury Park Press, officials began seeking bids as early as Thursday for the $36 million dollar project. The Federal Highway Administration is expected to pay 80 percent of the cost, with the state paying the rest.

During Superstorm Sandy, that section of the northern barrier island was breached, cutting a channel from the ocean to the Barnegat Bay. Hundreds of homes in Mantoloking and Brick were destroyed as a result.

Work is expected to begin in February.
