Today of course is Halloween which I have always thought of as a kid’s celebration that adults have somehow hijacked.

Beginning late this afternoon and into the evening (depending on curfews) kids of all ages will be combing neighborhoods looking for treats because nobody asks for tricks anymore and it you did you would probably get some agonizing expression in return. Hopefully most of the costumed youngsters will be polite and say “thank you” while not running across your lawn, stomping mums and kicking over pumpkins.

I said at the beginning that today belongs to children because it seems to me in the last 10 or 20 years adults have somehow got more involved. There was always a parent or two who liked to dress up with their kids which I found a bit weird but as the saying goes, “different strokes for different folks.”

It just seems like in recent years more and more adults think of Halloween as their holiday although it’s really not a holiday but a celebration.Anyway I have great memories of trick or treating while growing up in Seaside Heights when everyone knew everyone in the town.

In most cases you didn’t think of what you were going to be until the last minute after rumbling through closets although there were always some who bought those boxed costumes.  It seemed like they always came with masks with the elastic around them and if it was warm you couldn’t wait to take them off because you could barely breathe.

Anyway back in the old days you got little bags with all kinds of candy, including loose candy corn which everyone ate because there were no concerns over tainted candy.  Of course candy bars were popular and you got the big ones, not those little mini jobs handed out today. Some people even gave out candy apples which never made it home; you ate those while walking around.

As much as I liked those years my best Halloween memories are of my son and daughter dressing up and walking around the neighborhood  as a waiter, bumble bee, Donald Duck, mouse, sunflower, Snow White, cowgirl and witch just to name a few.  It was always a crazy day getting them ready while making sure you were home when kids came to the door.  Crazy, chaotic and tons of fun.

As for my Halloween plans, well it’s a Friday and that means High School Football.  Tonight’s Jersey Mike’s Game of the Week on Shore Sports Network.com and  News Talk Radio 1160 and 1310 AM will find us at Toms River North where the Mariners host Brick with the Green Dragons looking to clinch at least a share of the Class “A South” Championship.  Someone will get a treat; the other will feel like they’ve been tricked.
